Fort Wayne Agrees to Pay 80% of Joint Operation Board

The Allen County commissioners approved an updated agreement with Fort Wayne for the operation of the Joint Operation Board, which oversees 911 operations.
The agreement was tweaked with some minor changes, Commissioner Nelson Peters said Friday.
The three-year agreement is largely the same as the one approved in February 2010 but changes the formula for financing. Before the city paid 70 percent and the county picked up 30 percent, but that was changed to an 80-20 split, based on call volume.
Money to help pay for the 911 center comes from property taxes and 911 fee revenues. Phone companies automatically include a 911 fee in monthly bills, which can range from 70 cents to $2.49 a month.
Under a new state law effective in July, the state now administers and distributes the fees to counties on an annual basis. In the past, that income has been under the administration of the commissioners.
The 911 fees net the county about $2.3 million a year....
Allen County Council members are expected to give final approval to the agreement Thursday.
